Why Tonkin Cane?
Although there are more than a thousand species
of bamboo, only a few have found favour in use for rods. One of the early commonly used species was Bambusa
tulda also known as Calcutta or East India brown bamboo. This cane grows in
areas of north-eastern India. Another species utilised was known as Yadake (Arundinaria
japonica) the Japanese female cane that was used to make cheap rods. Finally that magical species Arundinaria amabilis known as Tonkin cane, or tea stick bamboo arrived on the scene and has become the one standard species used in the making of quality split cane rods. Only this particular species has the desired physical properties for rod construction. Culms are cut, floated down river, and then scrubbed and dried. It has excellent flexibility and fiber density and the long distance between the nodes makes it ideal for fly rods. One 4 meter (12 foot) culm provides enough material for one rod.
